Art meets Science

SCIENCE + ART

The science teacher and I teamed up to create this froggy project.

First these 7th graders had to review textures and create 4 different

textures on their paper using a variety of different materials.

Then, after a short review of evolution, natural selection, and variation

they had to draw a frog separate from their project.

Insert the amphibian somewhere on their paper and color it so that it

could survive in this “artsy” world!

WACKY DESIGNS

First the second graders and I reviewed warm and cool colors

by mixing the color groups

on a swirly paper.

Next they made puzzle pieces cutting both papers at the same time.

They had to put their paper puzzle pieces back together

by gluing them in order

warm then cool…

and they turned out very wacky and cool!

Ah! Animal has taken over my 2pt. perspective city!

AHHHHHHHHHH!

An animal has invaded my

2pt. perspective city!

This was such a fun project that was difficult yet imaginative to create!

First, we worked step by step in making a building in 2 pt. perspective.

After getting the hang of making 2 houses students were required to

make 10 buildings with windows and doors using their RULERS!

Then, they had to make their cities more realistic with details such as

cars, trees, people etc.

Finally, an animal came to town and destroyed at least one building.

Students could choose their animal or monster but they were required to

make it huge!

The Rainbow Fish

After reading, The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister,

these Kindergartners made a colorful fish with oil

pastels.

Once they drew and colored

2 fish they could add one sparkly fin,

like the story!

Finally they could add cool colors; blue, green,

and purple, for the water.

Ojibwe Vases

OJIBWE VASES

After reading about the cooking pots of the Ojibwe

culture in Minnesota these 6th graders created their

own pots.

However…

our clay was not cooperating with us so we made our

vases using recycled cardboard and plaster.

Once the vases were made students were required to

draw different designs symmetrically on their artwork.

JAPANESE CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Spring has arrived early this year!

We celebrated by creating a Japanese landscape and cherry blossom trees.

The 4th grade class discussed the festival

that take place each year in

Washington D.C.

Then they looked at Hokusai’s landscapes of Mt. Fuji.

First they painted their landscape.

Then added the

cherry blossom trees with

a straw, paint, and air!

Lastly, students added the cherry blossoms

carefully with a q-tip.

Green Pizza and Soda?

Would you?

Could you?

Eat

GREEN PIZZA AND GREEN SODA?

For Seuss month the 2nd grade decided to create

green pizza

rather than green eggs and ham.

Although we didn’t eat green pizza we had fun

turning our food art green.

Each student had to mix and make a different

shade of green for their food and drink.

Box of Crayons

Students read:

While walking in a toy store
The day before today,
I over heard a Crayon Box
With many things to say.
“I don’t like red!” said Yellow.
And Green said, “Nor do I!”
And no one here likes Orange,
But no one knows quite why.
“We are a box of crayons
that really doesn’t get along,”
Said Blue to all the others.
“Something here is wrong!”
Well, I bought that box of crayons
And took it home with me
And laid out all the crayons
So the crayons could all see
They watched me as I colored
With Red and Blue and Green
And Black and White and Orange
And every color in between
They watched as Green became the grass
And Blue became the sky.
The Yellow sun was shining bright
On White clouds drifting by.
Colors changing as they touched,
Becoming something new.
They watched me as I colored.
They watched till I was through.
And when I’d finally finished,
I began to walk away.
And as I did the Crayon box
Had something more to say……..
“I do like Red! ” said the Yellow
And Green said, “So do I !”
And Blue you are terrific!
“So high up in the sky.”
“We are a Box of Crayons
Each of us unique,
But when we get together
The picture is complete”
                                - written by Shane DeRolf

The first graders were so moved by the poem

we decided to make our own box of crayons.

Each student represented the color of their choice

and made their name into their own crayon!

CUBISM IN PHOTOGRAPHY

After making the Picasso we looked at another artist

famous for cubism in photography

named David Hockney.

Everyone took their own pictures from

two different angles and

reassembled them in order to create their own

self-portrait ~ cubist style!
